A recent study has exposed the presence of PM1, an ultrafine particulate matter in Central Delhi. PM1 particulate matter is more dangerous than the common pollutants PM2.5 and PM10. PM1 particulate matter is 70 times finer than the thickness of the human hair. It can directly go inside the bloodstream and is much dangerous than the known pollutants such as PM2.5 & PM10. Most of us are not aware that how much of Particulate matters are present in the air we breathe.

System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) has done a study on the average amount of particulate matter present in the air during different monsoons. The study has revealed the presence of very dangerous particulate matter in Central Delhi. The average volume of particulate matter present during summer, winter and monsoon season are 46, 49 and 20 micrograms per cubic meter.
There has been no safety standards defined yet for PM1. Because of which potentially harmful effects have not been documented. It is less than 1 micron in diameter and it can enter deep into the lungs and bloodstream. As per the Central Pollution Control Board, particulate matter reaching the Alveolar region can cause heart ailments. Moreover these fine particulates covers a large surface area and absorbs toxic compounds such as heavy metals and organic compound with high level of carbon content. The main sources of PM1 particulate matter are vehicle emission, factories, construction sites etc.
